RMS

Can we remove RMS after he did that talk at MMU? Or are we still holding out? we would always be willing to host him but aren't actively trying to get him? tdobson

Jono Bacon

It has been suggested that:

[Jono is] not really going to talk about free software as an ethical consideration

Software Freedom Law Centre / Freedom Task Force

I would be interested

the FSF's Software Freedom Task Force (SFLC) the FSFE's Freedom Task Force (FTF). --tdobson 14:26, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

Harald Welte

Harald Welte - although obviously a very experienced guy in *many* fields having just won an FSF annual Free Software Award, I would be most interested in hearing about his work relating to GPL violations. --tdobson 14:26, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

M6-IT CIC / Parrs Wood

On a much more local scale, I would be interested in hearing from M6-IT CIC. I would be interested in hearing about Parrs Wood Technology college's use of Free Software including their use of it on clients and it in their pupil behavior tracking system IRIS ( www.iris.ac ). --tdobson 14:26, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

I’ve added Tim Fletcher to Suggested Speakers. While looking for relevant links I rediscovered Schoolforge-UK, another source to look at.—sward 22:05, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

Tim suggested he could contact Hamish at Axiomtech/M6-IT CIC. Richard Smedley should be quite contactable too. —sward 13:54, 3 May 2008 (EDT) (from #manlug currybeer)

Moodle

Again in education I would be interested to hear more about moodle, both from the development side and from how and why it is deployed by schools and educational establishments --tdobson 14:26, 22 March 2008 (EDT)

I’m interested in a Moodle‐related talk—sward 21:25, 23 March 2008 (EDT)
I may be able to get someone from the Central Manchester CLC or Trinity CofE High School to talk about it. Last I heard, they went all Windows internally, but I think they’ll still be using Moodle and other free software.—sward 22:14, 23 March 2008 (EDT)
I have a Moodle admin/trainer and developer from Tameside College who might be interested in doing a talk, once I have a confirmation from both I can pass on contact info to Simon/Paul or whoever. They're supposably one of the largest Moodle users in Greater Manchester. --jondavis 09:47, 28 March 2008 (EDT)
I'm in favour of a Moodle talk. I saw a thing about a conference about moodle in liverpool a while back. I might see if that can suggest any speakers. tdobson

BBC

Michael Sparks from the BBC did a good talk at LugRadio Live last year on Dirac and BBC open source development. Also, I can find some Moodle administrators/developers if anyone else is interested in seeing a Moodle talk? --jondavis 13:11, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

Good suggestion on Michael Sparks. He has also talked about Kamaelia, another BBC project, for Python North West. I’ve added him to Suggested Speakers. Take a look at the BBC OpenSource Projects page for further inspiration.—sward 21:37, 23 March 2008 (EDT)
I have seen Micheal Sparks talk on Kamelia. It is quite technical, but good nevertheless. I would prefer to hear about something the BBC licenced (Dirac!) that wasn't Kamelia, but I don't mind. tdobson
I’m also interested in Moodle, and have given it its own section on this page.—sward 21:37, 23 March 2008 (EDT)

OpenSolaris / Sun’s Free Software

I'd like a talk on OpenSolaris and/or Sun's other things in Sun's free software portfolio.

—Dave Love

Alan Burlison—sward 14:17, 3 May 2008 (EDT) (from #manlug currybeer)

BSD

Get an alternative point of view from the BSD world. How things licensed under 3-clause BSD compare with GPL’d software (freer than free?). Difficulties with working with GPL’d software. Paul Robinson is someone to talk to for findng a speaker, he may even speak himself.—sward

MJ Ray

MJ Ray on free software and cooperatives.—sward 14:17, 3 May 2008 (EDT) (from #manlug currybeer)

Open Rights Group

A speaker from the Open Rights Group on what they’ve been doing, and also what Manchester Free Software could do too. (We all love Becky Hogge.)—sward 14:17, 3 May 2008 (EDT) (from #manlug currybeer)

I had a good chat with Becky and Glyn at LRL last year, someone from ORG would be excellent. --jondavis 17:26, 19 June 2008 (EDT)

OpenStreetMap

A talk on OpenStreetMap, which aims to provide free map data for the world. Key figures such as Steve Coast, Andy Robinson. More local ones are John McKerrell and Tim Waters.—sward 14:19, 3 May 2008 (EDT) (#manlug currybeer)

Dave Crossland

Dave Crossland does typeface design, and works on free typefaces. He could tell us about things in those areas.
