My Story
The enthusiasm for free software was developed in me by my father. Like everybody else, he was used to proprietary software, until he realized that what he was doing was wrong. Ever since then, he has been using free software only. As a child, I used to hear about Ubuntu, Red Hat, ODF, DFD from him, but never tried to find out what they meant, perhaps because I wasn't interested in computers and softwares. But things changed when I completed my tenth grade.
The Christmas Day of 2010 was a turning point in my life. It was on that day that I had received a laptop for securing first division in the tenth grade under the scheme of Govt. of Assam. The operating system installed in the system was Ubuntu. That was the beginning of my journey on the road to "I will use Free Software Only".
It is disheartening to see that people don't want to change. They stick to what they are taught and are resistant to try ideas and practices that will change society. It is due to this fact that I have to use proprietary software at school and college and also because it a part of the curriculum. This gave me the motivation to start a college group that consists of free software users. Together, we can spread awareness and create a free society for everyone.
People first use proprietary software and later switch to free software, but my story is completely different. I started using the computer a little later than all my friends, but I am glad that I started with one of the most popular free operating systems, Ubuntu. I sincerely thank my father for this.
