What is LibrePlanet?

The LibrePlanet project is a global network of free software activists organized into teams working together to help further the ideals of software freedom by advocating and contributing to free software.

The main activity of LibrePlanet is hosting regional teams that operate locally in accordance with the project mission statement. One example is the Massachusetts Team which you are welcome to join if you are in the area, or check your regional page to see if there another one near you. Local teams are just getting started on LibrePlanet so you may want to start your own.

August's featured resource: Sonar

Each month, we feature an interesting resource, group, or project in-progress on the wiki.

This month, we are featuring the Sonar project. This project is all about accessibility for GNU/Linux users, and is being led by Campaigns Intern, Jonathan Nadeau.

See our list of past featured resources.

Project history

The LibrePlanet project began during the 2006 FSF Associate Member Meeting to help organize ways to bring free software as a movement "into the mainstream." We started by organizing the FSF members at the 2006 meeting into groups based on geography. They then brainstormed ideas for how to organize people around issues central to the free software movement, and posted those ideas on a wiki page titled after their region. You can read those ideas on the pages linked to from the 2006 Member Meeting page.

Please remember that this wiki is focused on free software, not open source. Also be mindful of the power of words and the importance of framing the issues we discuss and work on in the best possible terms.

LibrePlanet conferences

There have been three LibrePlanet conferences so far, and a fourth conference is planned for 2012.
  • LibrePlanet2009 – a one day conference at Harvard Science Center, in Cambridge, MA
  • LibrePlanet2010 — a two day conference, with an extra day for a GNU Hackers Meeting and workshops. Also at the Harvard Science Center.
  • LibrePlanet2011 — a one day conference in Boston, MA at Bunker Hill Community College.
  • LibrePlanet2012 — a very special conference, currently in the planning stage for 2012. The conference will be in the Boston area once more.

Get involved!

Please help LibrePlanet spread freedom!

Let's start something!

LibrePlanet is still getting off the ground and is under heavy construction at the moment! Your help organizing this wiki is greatly appreciated. We're using Semantic MediaWiki properties mainly, rather than categories, so please read the introduction if you haven't used it before.
