Sugar Labs

Sugar is an activity-focused, free/libre open-source software learning platform for children. Collaboration, reflection, and discovery are integrated directly into the user interface. Through Sugar's clarity of design, children and teachers have the opportunity to use computers on their own terms. Students can reshape, reinvent, and reapply both software and content into powerful learning activities. Sugar's focus on sharing, criticism, and exploration is grounded in the culture of free software (FLOSS). The Sugar desktop is available for most GNU/Linux distributions. Many individual Sugar activities are also available through Flatpak. There is also a version of Sugar that runs in a web browser (Sugarizer). And some stand-alone Sugar Labs projects, such as Music Blocks, a collection of manipulative tools for exploring fundamental musical concepts in an integrative and fun way.

Why free software matters to Sugar Labs

The Sugar pedagogy is embodied in the culture of Free/Libre Software; teachers and students are empowered with both the freedom to act and the freedom to critique. Criticism of ideas is a powerful force in learning and in fostering intellectual and economic development; unleashing that is an important part of our mission. We support teachers and learners by being open, free/libre, and by providing scaffolding to facilitate participation in our developer community.
