IRC (Instant Relay Chat) is a protocol that allows a large number of people to create or join a chat room to carry out discussions. Connecting to an IRC channel requires an IRC client. On GNU/Linux, XChat is among the most popular. Konversation is another option for KDE. To use IRC within Firefox or IceCat, try [ChatZilla http://chatzilla.hacksrus.com/]. To use IRC through the terminal, the most popular option has always been irssi. Once you install any one of these, enter the server and channel names to connect.
