Soldering RULES!

Soldering RULES! by SelenaDe 22:03, 9 February 2010 (UTC), how to make cool stuff with heat, melty metals and Other Things. Fix your friend's broken hair driers! Make blinky things! Control your home heating system from your COMPUTER instead of pressing stupid buttons! (that requires more than just solder, but you know what I mean).

Choosing a Free Software project

Choosing a Free Software project LeslieHawthorn - When you're trying to get started in Free Software, where do you start? How do you figure out which project is right for you? How do you find the right people to help you help them? This talk will help you get started.

Matt Lee and Mako Hill -- Lightning

An expanded version of our lightning talk from Software Freedom Day.

MongoDB: a "NoSQL" Free Software Document DB

MongoDB is a free-as-in-freedom, dynamic, schemaless, document-oriented database aimed at highly scalable web applications. This lightning talk will describe MongoDB and why you'd want to use it. Speaker: Richard Kreuter. Link: http://www.mongodb.org

How to Get Started Contributing to GNOME Shell

Marina Zhurakhinskaya will talk about how you can start contributing to GNOME Shell, step by step.

Tor: Online Privacy and Free Software FTW!

5 minute crash course in Tor, online privacy and why it matters, and running a successful business on wholly free software. Or, the super-condensed version of Andrew's Tor talk at FOSDEM (http://fosdem.org/2010/schedule/events/tor).

LinuxLibre: documenting devices that require non-free firmware

I'd like to talk about the recent effort that I have started to gather documentation on the devices that are not fully supported by free-software because non-free firmware is required. The purpose of documenting these devices in to foster the development of free firmware for them. This effort is complementar to the LinuxLibre effort.

speaker: Felipe Sanches

Foreseeing High Priority Projects list

During the last recent years I've been actively discussing the Free Software Movement strategies. I am currently a co-mantainer of one of the projects in the FSF High Priority Projects list (GNU LibreDWG). This list is very important for raising awareness on the critical areas where we are still lacking free software support. I will quickly present some suggestions of projects that I consider critical and that are currently not listed there.

  • Free development tools for reconfigurable hardware development (FPGA Tools)
  • Accessibility-enabled system since first boot
  • privacy-enabling email systems

Open Source for Learning - Moodle, LAMS, ELGG, Mahara and Sugar - a whirl wind tour!

Learn what projects are out there and why you might want to use each.

Should there be a free software app store?

Apple's iPhone App Store iconically restricts users' and developers' freedoms, but lots of people are signing up to code for it -- even making their entire livelihoods from it.

Since the free software movement has encouraged selling free software since its beginnings, should we be thinking about app stores for free software? Would end-users pay for free software if they were asked to?

What precedents exist for this? How much free software is in existing app stores?

User-specified prices with defaults? Experiments by Radiohead and Jane Siberry

Concerns and problems

  • user inconvenience and harm to free software adoption
  • the distinctiveness of the apt-get mechanism
  • confusing users about distinctions between free and non-free software?
  • changing developers' priorities
  • conflicts over allocation of funds

OpenHatch: Making free software a little more fun

OpenHatch is a website for making it easier to contribute to free software. You'll learn about our recent initiatives for getting new contributors involved and helping existing contributors find new things to work on.

Animating with Free Software: The Tube Open Movie Project

the Tube Open Movie project production blog is short film production using Free software and aiming to release an open movie (all content creative commons licensed, all production files released with the movie, and all code we write released under the GPL) similar to Elephants Dream, Big Buck Bunny and Sintel produced by the Blender Institute and Blender Foundation.

The talk by Director Bassam Kurdali will start with the teaser for the project, give a quick snapshot of our current status replete with pictures and artwork and then focus on the goals of the project, both in terms of the film itself and in terms of (Free) software.
