Many laptops still have non-free software[1] that initialises the hardware before loading the operating system.

Some of theses laptops are able to run 100% free GNU/Linux distribution out of the box.

The software[1] that does the very first hardware initialisation isn't part of the GNU/Linux distributions. Instead it's bundled inside the laptop itself.[2]


  1. 1.01.1 This software can have many names (BIOS, EFI, UEFI etc...).
  2. It resides inside a flash chip on the mainboard. Some laptops can or do use some free software to do the very first initialisation.
