About us

The LibrePlanet Illinois Team is a group of hackers, volunteers, and activists organized around furthering the ideals of free software and related issues concerning digital rights as necessary means for a free society. We operate in accordance with the LibrePlanet Mission Statement and Code of Conduct.

This group is working towards a free society through free software, but we are not just a GNU/Linux User Group. We may promote any software that respects the freedom of its users. We are a team with a mission! We recognize that some people choose to make compromises, temporary or otherwise, with proprietary software, and some who may not always say GNU/Linux, or "free software" instead of "open source", and we welcome those people to join us and discuss their thoughts, but as a LibrePlanet team, we frame terms accordingly. We are open to people of all levels of interest in free software and welcome new participants. We are all united in the fight for software freedom as an important and necessary means for the prospect of a free society.

Meetings

Hi All!

๐Ÿš€ Join Us for an Illinois Tech & Libre Software Meetup! ๐Ÿง๐Ÿ”“

A Call to Action: Discussing the Sustainability of Software Freedom

You are invited to a special joint online meeting for members of LibrePlanet Illinois, the Illinois Ubuntu LoCo, and the Beyond 40 Free Software Caucus of Illinois. All advocates for user freedom are welcome and encouraged to join.

This will not be a typical meet-and-greet. Instead, we will dive deep into a critical question facing our movement: Is the ecosystem that produces free software sustainable?

Our discussion will be centered around the recent FOSSforce article, "Is Free or Open Source Software Sustainable?" We will analyze the challenges of funding, developer burnout, and corporate influence, and brainstorm how we, as activists in Illinois, can contribute to a more resilient foundation for software freedom.

To Prepare: To ensure a productive debate, please read the article before the meeting and come prepared to share your analysis and ideas.

Details:

  • Date: Thursday, August 21st, 2025
  • Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Central Time
  • Location: Online (Jitsi)

Action Required: Please RSVP to Receive the Meeting Link!

To protect the privacy of attendees and ensure a focused discussion, the meeting link will only be sent to those who RSVP. Please confirm your attendance by sending an email to freedom@zackhacks.xyz by August 20th.

The future of software freedom depends on our collective action. Let's get to work.
