Safe space policy template for free software events

The following sample template is for a safe space policy. It is designed to be a guide for free software event organizers who are looking to create their own policy that promotes a harassment-free event experience for everyone. We encourage event organizers to distribute the completed safe space policy to event participants at the beginning of your event.

  • We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Offensive or graphic sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any event venue, including talks.

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, body size, race, religion, nationality, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

  • Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
  • If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the event organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the event.
  • If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact an event organizer immediately.
  • Event organizers will assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event.

We value your attendance.

This policy is based on several other policies, including the OLF anti-harassment policy, written by Esther Filderman and Beth Lynn Eicher, and the Con Anti-Harassment Project. Mary Gardiner, Valerie Aurora, Sarah Smith, and Donna Benjamin generalized the policies and added supporting material. Many members of LinuxChix, Geek Feminism, staff of the FSF, and other groups contributed to this work.
