This talk is by Michael Dorrington and entitled "KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine): How to use it and its uses". The talk is on Linux kernel host virtualisation using KVM and QEMU. (Note: KVM has been ported to FreeBSD, see http://retis.sssup.it/~fabio/freebsd/lkvm/ ). The talk will explain about virtualisation, why you would want to use Virtual Machines (VMs), explain KVM and QEMU, demonstrate the KVM/QEMU options, demonstrate installing an OS in a VM, demonstrate snapshots, demonstrate emulating a different CPU architecture for a VM.

Michael has been using the Linux kernel for many years. He has used QEMU since its early days and then KVM. Michael uses KVM for, among other things, running kFreeBSD and Hurd as demonstrated in June's talk "GNU's Not Linux: kFreeBSD and Hurd kernels for the GNU System".

Location

The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at Madlab on Edge Street in the Northern Quarter. "(Between Thomas St and the Craft Centre, opposite A Bar Called Common)". We will be located upstairs. The venue provides wifi. The talk is followed by an informal discussion in the bar opposite (A Place Called Common).
