I'm a newbie FSF member here on libreplanet, after having lurked in the periphery of FSF for many years.
I'm funded by the UK's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (a.k.a. the BBSRC) to coordinate the development of Jalview, a GPLv3 java-based system for visualizing, editing and analysing multiple alignments of biological sequences.
When I'm not coding, I give training courses on Jalview, and I also help run a meeting about biological data visualization called VIZBI which happens in Boston, USA and Heidelberg, Germany, and is funded by NIH and EMBO.
I'm interested in supporting the practice of open source in all areas of science, for a whole bunch of reasons. If you're interested, see the PLOS Computational Biology editorial I wrote with Andreas Prlic, who manages Bio-Java which is part of the OBF Open Bioinformatcs Forum. For the last few years, I've regularly participated in the Google Summer of Code as a mentor and co-admin with Karen Cranston over at The NESCent Phyloinformatics Summer of Code.
