could there be a way that doesn't disable js for the rest of the google services? I used YesScript (which operates on a blacklist rather on a whitelist) and blacklisted just mail.google.com. Since a lot of people use NoScript, it seems that NoScript and YesScript work together, but I didn't test this thoroughly.

You can use this page https://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=suggestions.cs (requires Javascript!) to suggest a new feature to Google. I believe perhaps this is the best way to communicate our message, rather than using the help center, that has a purpose of helping users with technical problems rather than suggest new features. I submitted the feature under the category "Other" and used the text "Make Gmail FOSS-friendly by releasing its Javascript code under a free software license."

The English grammar has errors that need amending, but I don't seem to have edit rights.
