As for VST and the problems with existing software - at least what I saw - it is very difficult to work on sound. A lot of electronic composers are working on sound music - ambient, for instance. For that you hardly need midi and notes - you need effects to process sound. Sound music is slowly becoming a sophisticated and very beautiful form of art. | As for VST and the problems with existing software - at least what I saw - it is very difficult to work on sound. I am monitoring the discussions on this page very closely and I will report all the investigation on music sequencers here. I will actually try to write an album. | I am monitoring the discussions on this page very closely and I will report all the investigation on music sequencers here. | − | However, even in spite of the fact that it is probably possible to do music well using free software, multimedia projects obviously need a higher priority these days - I do still think this call is valid and is especially useful to attract many people who use computer as a multimedia station. | + | However, even in spite of the fact that it is probably possible to do music well using free software, multimedia projects obviously need a higher priority these days - I do still think this call is valid and is especially useful to attract many people who use computer as a multimedia station. Your points are valid, however, the issue is getting good sound sources (drums, piano, synthesizers etc.) and this means recording real instruments. You don't need VST technology to do professional music. What you lose by avoiding VST's is the sound, not your musical gift. It may be that you aren't used to the way free software works, so it seems backwards. I'd like to see you try cutting an album on rosegarden over the next month (say 10 tracks). Nothing great, just straight forward simple style with whatever sound fonts you can get. Then you can show the problems and perhaps get developers to work on solutions, while listening to your music ;) Blacky 17:59, 22 March 2009 (EDT)
This is a very good argument and I do plan to proceed with a very serious overview of existing software like Rosegarden and attempt at using it for actual music production. I have however added a new requirement on music performing software. I am monitoring the discussions on this page very closely and I will report all the investigation on music sequencers here. I will actually try to write an album. However, even in spite of the fact that it is probably possible to do music well using free software, multimedia projects obviously need a higher priority these days - I do still think this call is valid and is especially useful to attract many people who use computer as a multimedia station. lverona
