IceCat is not available in gNewSense; but there is a [https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/gnewsense-dev/2019-03/msg00002.html discussion about it] . For now, it is recommended for users of gNewSense to install the [https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnuzilla/2019-05/msg00010.html Trisquel package], or the [https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/ Gnuzilla release].

Revision as of 06:37, 5 September 2019

IceCat is maintained by volunteers on a "labor of love" basis. As such, community participation is essential, in order to keep the project healthy and serving the interests of it's users. Anyone who is interested in packaging IceCat or liberated versions of other Mozilla programs, and anyone who would like to help with documentation or artwork, or who may wish simply to voice their opinions (aka. bike-shed) about aspects of it's development; such as: which features should be enabled or disabled, what the home page should look like, what is the default search engine, etc, is encouraged to subscribe to the 'gnuzilla-dev' mailing list, or request to join the Gnuzilla team on Savannah.

gNewSense

IceCat is not available in gNewSense; but there is a discussion about it . For now, it is recommended for users of gNewSense to install the Trisquel package, or the Gnuzilla release.

GNU

The vanilla icecat/gnuzilla:

In GNU Guix <https://gnu.org/s/guix> we keep our IceCat package up-to-date by promptly running the 'makeicecat' script on the latest Firefox ESR release whenever Mozilla issues security updates. We had to abandon use of the IceCat-provided source tarballs for the reason you mention.

You could use the IceCat from Guix, or you could run the 'makeicecat' script yourself to produce an up-to-date IceCat source tarball from the corresponding Firefox ESR source tarball. You can find 'makeicecat' in the Gnuzilla git repository, here:
