Revision as of 22:31, 3 August 2009

The objective of this project is to identify hardware devices that work with free software.

This is a list of hardware devices that we have tested with a free GNU/Linux distribution.

Wireless LAN adapters

Vendor Model and version Chipset Notes
TP-Link TL-WN510G ver. 1.1 ExpressCard Atheros AR2413 Works with linux-libre 2.6.27 and above. lspci output: 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)

Wired LAN adapters

Vendor Model and version Chipset Notes
HP NetXtreme Broadcom BCM5755 Works with Trisquel 3.0 (kernel Linux trisquel 2.6.28). lspci: 3f:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5755 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)

Tested with Trisquel 2.1 (kernel Linux trisquel 2.6.24), but didn't work - use latest version. lspci: same as above.

Graphics cards
Vendor Model Notes
Via VT8378 Works. Supports modest 3D acceleration (Egoboo runs ok). Tested with gNewSense 1.1 . Onboard card.
Video capture devices
Vendor Model Chipset Notes
Mygica x830 Conexant 88xx Works with Trisquel mini 2.1 and gNewSense 2.2 with Linux-libre 2.6.28
Genius TVGo A12 Philips SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Works with Trisquel 3.0 (kernel Linux trisquel 2.6.28). lspci: 07:04.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1)

Also tested with Trisquel 2.1 (kernel Linux trisquel 2.6.24) but didn't work - use the latest version. lspci output: 07:04.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d1)

Laptops

Vendor Model Notes
Asus Eee PC 2G Surf (700) Works. All hardware is compatible with free software, but BIOS is non-free. Tested with gNewSense 2.2 and Linux-libre 2.6.27. Also works with Trisquel mini 2.1, which has Linux-libre 2.6.28. It has an Atheros AR242x (AR5BXB63) wifi adapter that works with ath5k driver.

Vendor Model Notes
Packard Bell dot Works. All hardware (video with acceleration, sound, webcam, wlan, lan) is compatible with free software, but BIOS is non-free. Tested with Trisquel 3.0RC1.
