This page is intentionally in English as it addressed people around the world who would like to say hello on the camera, via a video link.

How to Select Your Hardware?
Most normal PCs are compatible with 100% free software. Maybe Coreboot is the last frontier, but in general, you can try booting one of the FSF-endorsed distributions on a LiveCD, and if that works, you're (almost) set.
You still need to check that:
- the webcam is working
- the network interface is working
What Streaming Software to Use?
For testing purpose, try VLC. If VLC can do it, you can always use that to stream and record the stream. An alternate solution is to use the latest (beta) version of Icecast, that supports Ogg Video streaming with Theora.
How to Record the Stream?
If you're using VLC, it has an option to record to file. You may put a listening VLC on a receiving machine, and record that, so as to save processing power to the streamer machine.
Please DO record in the highest possible quality, and DO stream in the most fluid format (i.e. prefer quality for recording, and fluidity for streaming). It's always better to prioritize sound quality over video quality. For example, you can achieve good result with hasciicam, and CD-quality sound. But a clicking/cutting sound will not go well with high-quality video.
Keep in mind that the bandwidth of your correspondent is more important than your own. If you have 2Gbps upload capability, but the other side only has 512Mbps download capability, your 1Gbps High Definition video will not work with them. Better downgrade to a 384Kbps stream. And the best way to ensure your streaming session goes well is to perform a live test with the other side beforehand!

What If You Can't Make It?
Timezones being what they are, it's not always possible to connect live. In this situation, uploading a "Thank GNU" in video would be better. All these "Thank GNUs" can then be edited to form a world-around thank GNU of supporters for the project.
