Some older Broadcom Wi-Fi chips work with free software:

  • The OpenFWWF peripheral software is compatible with chips for PCI and PC-card busses and it is present in some Broadcom SoCs (like the one in the WRT54GSv4), but unfortunately lacks support for encryption.

Some newer chips can operate with only the existing instructions in ROM, but more research is needed to understand which chips specifically already work without nonfree peripheral software. The WiFiResearch article on Replicant has more detail on that. The top priority is probably to look if the community projects for the BCM4330 are 100% free or not.
