Details

Most people use the Internet that uses the Internet Protocol version 4, IPv4. However, due to the decreasing number of unallocated IPv4 addresses, interest is growing in Internet Protocol version 6, IPv6. This next generation Internet Protocol has a vastly greater number of addresses so solving the IPv4 address exhaustion concern. But IPv6 is not simply IPv4 with more addresses. IPv6 comes with new ways of doing things, new features and funkiness. Software that supports IPv4 does not necessarily support IPv6.

The talk will cover:

  • An overview of the IPv4 Internet.
  • The IPv4 address exhaustion concern.
  • IPv6 overview including DNS in IPv6.
  • How to run both IPv4 and IPv6 on the same machine (dual stack).
  • How you can get an IPv6 address and get on the IPv6 Internet NOW!
  • Demonstrate IPv6 in action including tools and configuration.
  • Overview of IPv6 support in Free Software.
  • And more!

Michael Dorrington is a long time Free Software and Internet user. Michael has become increasingly interested in IPv6 as the number of unallocated IPv4 addresses reduces and the exhaustion concern rises.
