My story

My passion and enthusiasm for free software was instilled by my father. Like everybody else, he was used to proprietary software, until he realized that what he was doing was wrong. Since then, he has been using free software only. As a child, I used to hear about Ubuntu, Red Hat, ODF, DFD from him, but I never tried to find out what they meant, perhaps because I wasn't interested in computers and software. But things changed when I completed my tenth grade.

The Christmas Day of 2010 was a turning point in my life. It was on that day that I had received a laptop for securing first division in the tenth grade under a scheme of the Government of Assam. The operating system installed in the machine was Ubuntu. That was the beginning of my journey on the road to "I will only use Free Software".

It is disheartening to see that people don't want to change. They stick to what they are taught and are resistant to try ideas and practices that will change the society. It was due to this fact that I was forced to use proprietary software at school and now in college and also because it is a part of the curriculum, which perhaps may never change. This stubbornness of the education system motivated me to create awareness among people around me. That is how I started LibrePlanet JRE Group of Institutions, our college group that consists of free software users. Together, we plan to change people's perception and create a free society for everyone.

People first use proprietary software and later switch to free software, but my story is completely different. I started using the computer a little later than all my friends, but I am glad that I started with one of the most popular free operating systems, Ubuntu.

I sincerely thank my father and my teacher, Rituparna Saha, for their constant support and encouragement.

All JREans working only on free software is my dream that is yet to be realized!
