If you would like to give a lightning talk, please come to room 2540 and talk to Josh Gay or Brett Smith to be added to the schedule. First come, first served, so come as soon as you can.

If you're interested in giving a lightning talk, add your talk idea, and some contact details. We'll pick the best talks and announce them early in March.

Please note: if you're already speaking at LibrePlanet 2012, you can't give a lightning talk.

Open Wheelchairs - an update on my (slow) progress

Mary-Anne and I gave some brief discussion last LP about the need for an open power-wheelchair design that allowed users to get a chair that more closely meets their actual needs, as opposed to what the chair manufacturers condescend to let us have...

I am making very slow progress on this. I've obtained a used chair to act as a donor-chassis, and gotten it stripped down.

I've managed to do an upgrade on my MIG welder so that I can work with aluminium (the donor-chassis is aluminium)

Most significantly, I will soon have gotten my drivers license back, so it will be possible for me to go to more places (such as possibly visiting makerspaces, purchasing supplies, and so forth)

illumos

I'd like to give a basic introduction to the illumos project. illumos is a young community around a scalable and reliable operating system with a lot of heritage. It's also the open development hub for some cross-platform technologies including ZFS and DTrace. Some of our goals are to replaced closed binaries inherited from OpenSolaris, and to continue development of new features and hardware support.

We've had a busy first year and a half, with new locales infrastructure, new ZFS enhancements and more in the pipeline, a KVM port now used in production, new distros expanding the user base, and more!

libreCMC

libreCMC is not much of a project at the moment, but it is off to a great start. Libre Concurrent Machine Cluser is an embedded GNU/Linux-libre distro that will make it easy to deploy computer clusters. The project was started with the original goal of just being a small GNU/Linux libre distro, but has turned into a project whose goal is to shorten its compile time.

While there are many solutions for breaking up the various tasks of building and compiling software, most do not do a good job of sharing the task with multiple cores, let alone a hand full of machines. Since most of us who have a passion for technology have several machines laying around, why not put them to use to save time that could have been better spent on your project? At the moment, the project's primary goal is to create a solid software stack before trying to find software projects that best do what we need. Once we have a stack that is small, reliable and free, we can then properly implement software that accomplishes the project's task.

X11 Color Freedom

XFree86 is a freely redistributable open-source implementation of the X11 Window System used by many free operating systems. Before 2006, the color-name assignments of X11 could be configured by editing the installed file "rgb.txt". Sometime after 2005, the XFree86 releases used by major GNU/Linux distributions changed to compile the default color-name assignments into the executable library, eliminating the freedom of users to change or replace the color dictionary.
