(Add 36c3 research, I don't remember if it was possible to run fully free software on the PSP though a bootrom issue or if it still used bugs in the code which is loaded later.)

Research

  • On some PSP versions, it's possible to run (fully free?) software on it[1]. However a lot of work would still be needed to write the RAM initialization code, etc.

There are also tools[2] to trace the boot of the PSP software. So it might be possible to use that to replay the RAM initialization and write or adapt a free software OS for it.
