Minutes of Meeting of 11th November 2009

Time: 19:15, Monday 11th November 2009.

Present: James, Simon, Matt, Tim, Mark, Roy, Michael (chair, minutes). Richard (towards end).

Apologies: None.

Introductions

There were a large number of people compared to normal including newish people so Michael asked for introductions from everyone.

Last Meeting

Minutes of last meeting dated 11th November 2009, were approved as correct by Michael, the only person present at both!

Announcements and other business

Tim says Barcamp Manchester was good. No date for next one.

Handover of Chairperson and Treasurer

Treasurer. Matt handed over the money to Mike as Leslie not present to accept money or position. Position officially handed over.

Chair. Lucy not present to handover position. Position officially handed over.

Speakers

Tim on November speaker. Last month had Michael Sparks because couldn't get hold of Code Think guy. Chris Warburton not available in November. Tim contacted hopefully get a response. Plan B is Mike doing bug reporting talk.

Tim on January. Was going to get Code Think for Jan but now want for November. Or possibly Pirate Party but they would be better for Feb or later out the way of student exams. Open Rights Group for February. Mark Taylor from Sirius Corportion? Tim was asked to get Speaker arrange before end of year for Jan so that we don't have to rush to get a speaker at the beginning of the year.

ACTION: - Mike to write report on bug reporting.

ACTION: - Tim to confirm speaker for November.

ACTION: - Tim to get speaker for January.

MMU Pro-Dev

Went well. Lots students. Asked to do forum with Microsoft, Google and Free Software.

Got lots email addresses of students interested in Free Software. Linux magazines were given out at no cost and up take was high. Sold one book, think two went missing. Organiser said they were not going run another event, we tried to persuade them to run one again. Spoke to someone from MDDA (John Keys?) and ranted to them about MDDA, he said that we could get more access.

ACTION: - Mike to write report.

MDDA Workshop

Present were Tim, Mike, Leslie and Rob. Kicked out at 8pm which is too early. Interest shown in Tor and OpenPGP workshops. Mike said he'd do workshop on bug reporting if he did the bug reporting talk.

ACTION: - Mike to do bug reporting workshop if talk goes ahead.

Software Freedom Day

Reports not rewritten.

ACTION: - Leslie to write a report.

ACTION: - Michael to write a report.

Merchandise

Been selling them cheaper. Roy says link to the book online. James says to leave book at Contact Theatre.

Reminded Tim to contact FSF for stickers. GPLv3, Defective by Design, Windows7sins.

ACTION: - Michael to contact book seller about buying more "Free Software, Free Society".

Bank Account

Leslie not present. Bank account useful to receive payments and grants.

LUG Radio Live

Tim appreciated Mike's selling technique.

ACTION: - Mike to write report.

DRM

Out of Agenda order. Matt thinks that DRM shouldn't be as our core issue.

Ubuntu 9.10 Release Party

Didn't take flyers. Spoke to people, including Salford Uni, about free software and free software societies.

Speaking Up

Out of Agenda order. Simon said address the problem of people not speaking up.

Logo Competition

Mike got Luke on team mailing list. Other actions not done.

ACTION: - Michael to email Pete to discuss refining logo and to discuss getting his prize to him.

ACTION: - Michael to ask Luke and team about T-shirt printing.

More other business

Tim's friend is setting up a young girl geek society want to past the word on. Words were exchanged on whether this was a good idea or not.

Matt knows a company with used USB sticks that they want to donate but wanted to know can they be safely delete. Advice was yes if they are dd'ed.

Next Meeting

Monday, 14th December 2009. 19:00 at the Waterhouse. The day before the Christmas party.
