Pirate Party UK and Free Software

Details

If you are politician, or a member of a political party, and your party has a stance on Free Software (not Open Source!) then please attend as the event will include a lively discussion where you can put forward your party's stance. If you know of anyone matching this please tell them about the event.

This event should not be construed as an endorsement of the Pirate Party UK (PPUK) by MFS. Other political parties are available.

Description taken from http://www.pirateparty.org.uk/ :

"Pirate Party is the political party of the digital age. We represent the changes demanded by technology that governments and industries are resisting with all their might. We want copyright and patent laws to be reformed to fit their purpose, and your privacy and freedom of speech to be upheld and protected."

The talk will include:

  • PPUK's stance on Free Software.
  • PPUK's stance on Software Patents.
  • PPUK's stance on Digital Restrictions Management (DRM).
  • The role PPUK sees for Free Software in government.
  • PPUK's consultation of RMS.

The event will include a Q&A session, discussion and then lively debate in the pub afterwards.

Puppet Camp Ticket Competition

Puppet Labs have generously donated a prize of a ticket to Puppet Camp EU 2011: Amsterdam. This event is on April 28, 2011 until Friday, April 29, 2011. You can't buy a ticket for it now as they've all sold out but the 'Late Registration' ticket was $400. The prize is the ticket only and does not include such things as travel, accommodation, or food.

The competition to win this prize will be held at 19:00 on Tuesday, 19th April 2011 at Madlab (the MFS talk will happen afterwards). If you wish to win this prize then you need to arrive a little earlier and let Michael Dorrington know that you wish to enter. Then 10 people will be chosen at random or all people who entered if that is 10 or less. Each person in turn will be then be given 1 minute to say why they should win the ticket. The order in which they go will be chosen randomly. There will then be 5 minutes for the audience to question the candidates on why the candidate deserves to win. We will then go to a vote by the audience on each candidate in turn, starting with the first candidate to speak. For each candidate an audience member can vote for them by raising their arm (or equivalent) and, to be clear, an audience member may vote for more than one candidate (or none). In the case of a tie then Michael Dorrington will choose the winner. While effort has been made to make the rules clear and workable, any disputes will be settled by Michael Dorrington, who's judgement is final.

Location

The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at Madlab on Edge Street in the Northern Quarter. "(Between Thomas St and the Craft Centre, opposite A Bar Called Common)". The venue provides wifi. The talk is followed by an informal discussion in the bar opposite (A Place Called Common).

Transport

Parking

Around the venue there are parking meter bays that become zero cost after 6pm on Tuesday but get full up. There are paid parking lots around the venue, the light blue P in this OpenStreetMap centred on Madlab. A lot of them, perhaps all, are are owned by NCP. If you can't decide otherwise then park in Manchester Arndale.

Public Transport

Manchester Victoria (MCV) train station, Shudehill tram station and Manchester Piccadilly bus station are all fairly close to Madlab, see OpenStreetMap centred on Madlab. Manchester Piccadilly (MAN) train station and Manchester Central Coach Station are not too far either.
