Nem ID (http://nemid.info/) is a new tool meant for more easily accessing personal information online in Denmark. Nem ID links pretty much all services together, making it possible to do netbanking as well as many other things using the same passwords. The client is a Java applet, which means that it should run fine in OpenJDK, which is good.

At the end of 2010, all danes will have the possibility to use Nem ID to access both private and public services relatively easily and hopefully also securely. There is one problem, though: The inner workings of this system (and we're talking about a system that's going to contain a centralized database of all important personal information) are complety hidden.

The people behind the system have decided not to disclose how their server and client software work.

As a matter of fact, in a reply of an e-mail I (Nqpz 21:47, 23 July 2010 (UTC)) sent to the creators of this service (DanID, http://danid.dk/), I was told that they had chosen the "security by obscurity" way of handling security.[1] As we all know, this is the extremely effective type of defense that e.g. Microsoft uses.

Goal: Something must be done to free Nem ID.

What to do

What kind of activism should be used?

  1. I will publish the entire e-mail here if I get permission from them. It's not very long, and even if it's not available for reading purposes, the goal of this project should still be quite clear.
