Open Wheelchairs - an update on my (slow) progress
Mary-Anne and I gave some brief discussion last LP about the need for an open power-wheelchair design that allowed users to get a chair that more closely meets their actual needs, as opposed to what the chair manufacturers condescend to let us have...
I am making very slow progress on this. I've obtained a used chair to act as a donor-chassis, and gotten it stripped down.
I've managed to do an upgrade on my MIG welder so that I can work with aluminium (the donor-chassis is aluminium)
Most significantly, I will have gotten my drivers license back, so it will be possible for me to go to more places (such as possibly visiting makerspaces, purchasing supplies, and so forth)
illumos
I'd like to give a basic introduction to the illumos project. illumos is a young community around a scalable and reliable operating system with a lot of heritage. It's also the open development hub for some cross-platform technologies including ZFS and DTrace. Some of our goals are to replaced closed binaries inherited from OpenSolaris, and to continue development of new features and hardware support.
We've had a busy first year, with new locales infrastructure, new ZFS enhancements and more in the pipeline, a KVM port now used in production, new distros expanding the user base, and more!
