Details

Richard Smedley will be giving this month's talk, following on from our highly successful stall at Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2010, he writes:

"...it continues to remain a puzzle why so many in the charity sector actively campaign against Free Software solutions, and promote the sector’s continued reliance on an unsustainable model of dependence on a few tax-subsidised, private companies.

These are issues I hope to tease out a little in my talk on Free Software in the UK Voluntary Sector, and why you should care, at MFS’s 20th April meeting. I’d welcome people with a wide range of views to come along and debate the issue afterwards."

About Richard Smedley:

"Somewhere between Liverpool. Manchester, and Birmingham, pottering around in a convertible Morris Minor, is a man with a re-cycled laptop, and an endless supply of enthusiasm for Free Software, Sustainable IT, and the good things that can happen in the 3rd Sector when IT Strategy and social media hit an organisation.

When he can get away from the Internet, Richard Smedley also teaches (and practices) sustainable organic horticulture, permaculture & edible landscaping. Well, it beats working for a living."

The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at the Lass O'Gowrie pub on Charles Street in Central Manchester. We will be located in the Salmon Room upstairs, although there will be people around a little earlier downstairs (probably sampling the food and drinks on offer). Just ask at the bar if you can't find us. The Lass website has full details of how to get there and the fine selection of food and drink available. The venue also provides wifi.
