Emacs

GNU Emacs respond of that way, you can configure it to respond to most of your needs.

. emms for music and video
. ERC for irc connection
. identica-mode for identi.ca
. docview for pdf reader

GNU Emacs have the particularity to be "extensible" which mean that you can add in your Emacs some more solution to respond to your needs, for example you can use identica-mode to use identi.ca directly inside your Emacs session.

TTY

The TTY's, if you are familiar to works without X (Xorg) can does the trick too

. mutt for your mail
. elinks for the web
. mplayer for the music and video
. irssi for irc connection
. wget for download
. wput for ftp transfert
. rtorrent for torrents
. identicurse for identi.ca client
. moc (aka mocp) Music on Console for audio player
. screen (aka gnuscreen) for terminal multiplexer (like a windows manager for console applications)
. vim for text editing (alternative to emacs)
. htop for system monitor (colourful alternative to top)
. iftop for bandwitch connexion monitor (works in root)

Xterm

Xterm is one of the most used tool and it can also respond to most of your needs, most of tool used in TTY correspond to the one you can use in Xterm.

Windows Manager

StumpWM

. Stumpwm is a very nice Common Lisp write windows manger, lite & fast, ideal for GNU Emacs users

Awesome

. Awesome is a highly customizable tiling (or not) Windows Manager

. feh for image viewing
. uzbl for web browsing
