Your points are valid, however, the issue is getting good sound sources (drums, piano, synthesizers etc.) and this means recording real instruments. You don't need VST technology to do professional music. What you lose by avoiding VST's is the sound, not your musical gift. It may be that you aren't used to the way free software works, so it seems backwards. I'd like to see you try cutting an album on rosegarden over the next month (say 10 tracks). Nothing great, just straight forward simple style with whatever sound fonts you can get. Then you can show the problems and perhaps get developers to work on solutions, while listening to your music ;) Blacky 17:59, 22 March 2009 (EDT)

This is a very good argument and I do plan to proceed with a very serious overview of existing software like Rosegarden and attempt at using it for actual music production. I have however added a new requirement on music performing software. As for VST and the problems with existing software - at least what I saw - it is very difficult to work on sound. A lot of electronic composers are working on sound music - ambient, for instance. For that you hardly need midi and notes - you need effects to process sound. Sound music is slowly becoming a sophisticated and very beautiful form of art. I am monitoring the discussions on this page very closely and I will report all the investigation on music sequencers here. I will actually try to write an album. However, even in spite of the fact that it is probably possible to do music well using free software, multimedia projects obviously need a higher priority these days - I do still think this call is valid and is especially useful to attract many people who use computer as a multimedia station. lverona

  • This wiki is group based, so I suggest you start a group and work from there. Please create your user page using the Template:User as User:Lverona, not lverona. Your status field should be listed as founder, associate and your group should be listed as LocalName, WebOnlyName. This will tell people you are the founder of LocalName and also running WebOnlyName.
  • Groups are regional, so please check the main page for your region and area. You may then use the Template:Group to create your group. I suggest you create two groups, one for your city/province, and a Web Only one. The web only group will deal specifically with the multimedia issue, while your local group will promote free software generally. You may run both groups, however, so please separate the multimedia issues from your local group.
  • The web only group will need to be organized so you can incorporate this page into it and allow for expansion. Clearly, the web only group will want to attract similar musicians as yourself to work with research and development projects. You may create complimentary project pages in the Project namespace (click the Project menu option on the group page). This allows you to work on the group's mission and its objectives. The group pages will execute the projects. Unfortunately there is no project template available.
  • We are currently developing this site, so doing things are not as simple as we would like. If you prefer, I can setup your groups, which you can then edit, but I'll need to know your region, area, and (proposed) group names. Blacky 11:14, 24 March 2009 (EDT)

I would be very grateful if you do create the groups. My region is Europe, Russian Federation, area Moscow. Name Kirill Alferov, but my Internet and music alias is Louigi Verona.

As for local group, I am not sure what to call it - are there any general rule for local group names? It can be smth like Moscow Group, I don't know. Also, there seems to be one person listed in Russian Federation already.

As for multimedia group, I have a better idea for that and I would call the project "Multimedia Libre". So, Multimedia Libre Group. Louigi Verona
