Meetup

Meetup has widespread recognition. Perhaps the FSF could back a Massachusetts-based Meetup group for GNU or free software in general? Based on its success, the FSF could back other locales... I've been considering starting up a Boston-area GNU/Linux Meetup group (I'm surprised there isn't one yet!), but I've never organized something so big before. I wouldn't mind having some direction and/or guidance in this arena. For instance, where could I host something like this...? I don't have large venues at my disposal.

So far, according to Meetup, 112 people are interested in a Boston-area GNU/Linux Meetup. http://linux.meetup.com/cities/us/ma/boston/

If Meetup could be persuaded to renaming its "Linux" topic to "GNU/Linux", then that could raise awareness... In the very least, the FSF could use Meetup as a collaboration tool to eventually garner more support that would otherwise not exist in such a direct way. MySQL AB utilizes Meetup for their own grassroots efforts, and so far it seems to have worked out quite well for them.

I'm okay with listing events on Meetup, but I don't think I'm comfortable with having Meetup being sort of the core for that. In other words, I would rather make sure that we keep our "eye on the prize" of using free software tools for our organizational work, and anything we do on Meetup should be with the goal of getting people off Meetup. Posting for wikipedia events here?

Sure, I think so. Whatever advice/help you want to provide about good ways in Mediawiki to aggregate event postings like that would be much appreciated, since it's one of the main feature goals of LibrePlanet. meetup is a part of what this wiki should be doing and there is a wiki extension calendar which will take us quite far in that direction. With a few extra functions we'll pretty much have our own meetup here. All it takes is an upgrade. --Blacky 02:18, 26 March 2009 (EDT)

The DPL Calendar extension might make more sense for us, as it integrates with Semantic Mediawiki which we'd also like to use. FYI I think we are pretty close to being able to upgrade this mediawiki instance to something non-ancient now... --Danny 12:44, 6 April 2009 (EDT)
