Minutes of Meeting of 7th February 2011
Time: 19:00, Monday 7th February 2011.
Present: Michael (chair, minutes), Simon, Luke, J.P., Llewyn, Sam.
Apologies: Anna.
Introductions
There had not been a team meeting for many months, several new people have joined and in person introductions had not been done. So we had lots of Introductions and getting to know each other chat.
Last Meeting
Minutes of last meeting dated 12th April 2010 were approved as correct by Michael. Manchester/2010-04-12/Minutes.
Announcements and other business
Location of meetings
Luke thought that we should meet elsewhere than the Waterhouse. Llewyn suggested Common but it was pointed out that it was not cheap, which is one reason that we use the Waterhouse. Nexus (Art) Cafe suggested.
ACTION: - Luke to research and suggest locations.
Consensus based decision making
Luke suggested we use 'consensus based decision making'.
ACTION: - Luke to email team about 'consensus based decision making'.
Restarted meetings
Mike made an announcement about the meetings being restarted after months of not having any.
Speakers
Mike said that we need a speaker everyone month. That we have up to and including March already booked. That people in the group can do speeches themselves. That other people in the group helping to organising speakers would be a real help to him.
ACTION: - All to think about and investigate getting speakers.
Ubuntu
Mike's concern such as the copyright assignment without a promise back and Unity. Luke likes Mike's 'passive aggressive' (Minute typist (Mike) - Wouldn't agree this is the correct term! More like 'Intact and in the tent') such as wearing Debian T-shirts at Ubuntu events. Conclusion was to stay 'in the tent'.
Discussion and agreement that we should not keep the Facebook group 'up to date'. But suggested instead we will put the You won't find us on Facebook banner and link to our site.
ACTION: - Luke to put on You won't find us on Facebook banner and link to our site in the Facebook group.
Manchester University Society
J.P. reports no progress but he is still going to do this. Luke gave advice and will be an officer but can't devote lots of time to group.
ACTION: - Luke to give J.P. help in setting up Man Uni group.
ACTION: - J.P. to create the Man Uni group.
Okay Computer
People wanted to speak about this event. Concerns.
GNOME 3.0
Mike explained about the event and said we need to get our event details in by 15th Feb to get the Goodies. What are we going to do? Codethink talk? Who is willing to help? J.P., Llewyn, Luke, Sam and Mike.
ACTION: - All send ideas by Friday 11th Feb 2011 to Team list.
Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2011
Mike said that event was well received last year and presence at the event is a good idea, breaks out of the tech silo. Luke had concerns. Who will help? Llewyn, Mike, maybe Richard Smedley (emailed but no response yet). Really need at least 4 people in order to run a stall for a day.
ACTION: - Mike to chase up Richard Smedley.
SFD2011
Mike explained about SFD always being just before Uni term starts. Solution could be to run two events, one at Madlab on official day and one at Man Uni the week after. Mike suggested giving this some thought. It depends on there being a Man Uni society.
ACTION: - All to give SFD scheduling w.r.t. Uni term some thought.
Merchandise
New version of "Free Software, Free Society" is out. Can we get the new version? What to do with all the books we have? Simon, donate books to Madlab? Llewyn, donate to libraries?
ACTION: - All to give some thought about books and send ideas to team.
Promotional Material
Mike said that the leaflets are outdated. They need updating and printing out. J.P. suggested getting a domain, Mike explained about Matt Lee. Mike said he would update leaflets by end of Friday and if not then others could then do it.
ACTION: - Mike to update leaflets by end of Friday and send announcement to team.
ACTION: - All to think about promotional material.

Microsoft debate
Luke knows the Microsoft on campus rep. Luke suggests organising a debate with her plus the Apple rep.
ACTION: - Luke to contact the Microsoft on campus rep., and others, suggesting this event.
Okay_computer after party
Luke is running a blues and jazz Okay_computer after party on the Saturday, 19th Feb 2011.
Stallman 2011 talks
Sheffield and Preston are the closest to Manchester and are roughly equally close. Simon suggested organising a trip to the Sheffield event.
ACTION: - Simon to post Sheffield group visit train time to MFS list.
Next Meeting
Monday, 14th March 2011. 19:00 at the Nexus (Art) Cafe (to be confirmed). This is the day before the March talk.
