Sunday is an Open Space Event, you
should suggest talks and things you'd like to see.

This is the new page for organizing the details of the Libre Planet 2009 conference, to be held in Cambridge, MA on March 21st and 22nd, 2009.

There will be three tracks at the conference: Free Network Services, High Priority Projects and LibrePlanet Activism Network.

If you're doing any publicity about the event, there is a press kit with high-res logos available.

Attending

FSF members attend for no charge. Non-members pay $60 to help us cover the costs of food and coffee, etc. You can pay online now.

Communicating with other conference-goers

Follow conference microblogging with the #lp09 tag and the !libreplanet group at http://identi.ca.

There is a mailing list -- am-meeting -- Associate Membership Meeting Mailing list -- to discuss room sharing and other issues related to the meeting, and the LibrePlanet discussion list for talk about the project as a whole.

  • Harvard Square Hotel is very close and economical for a Harvard Square hotel. ($179 plus tax of 12.45% per night)

Hostels

These are about 5km from the conference venue, but have prices of $50 or less.

  • Bradley M. Kuhn likely has a room to split in the Hampton Inn in East Cambridge for Fri, Sat and Sun nights. Find him on #libreplanet on freenode to coordinate.
  • Dennis Kibbe I've booked a private room at the YMCA on Huntington Ave. for Thursday and Friday, but don't have a place for Saturday. Anyone else staying at the Y?

Directions

The 2009 Members Meeting will be held in:

Harvard Science Center which is easily accessible from Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. The red arrows will bring you in from either of the two northern exits from the Harvard Square T-stop.

Parking suggestions and directions for getting to Harvard as a whole are available on Harvard’s web site.

However, if you are driving to the Boston area, your best bet is probably to park in one place (like your hotel) and use public transportation to get around while you are here. Scroll down the page for more information on available public transportation.


Getting to Harvard Square via the MBTA (aka “The T”)

  1. Subway: Take the Red Line to the Harvard Square Station, which is a short walk from the campus. You can map out the building’s location using its street address: 1 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA or looking for it from Harvard Yard.
  2. Bus: Routes #66 (Allston), #71 (Watertown), #73 (Belmont), #68 (MIT East Campus), #69 (Lechmere), #72 (North Cambridge), #74 (Belmont), #76 (Belmont), #77 (Arlington), #78 (Arlmont), #86 (Somerville), #96 (Medford), and #1 (South Boston) all go to Harvard Square.

Airport Information

The closest airport is Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). From any airport terminal, look for signs for the Silver Line T stop. The Silver Line is a subway line that is actually a bus. Take the Silver Line to the South Station stop on the Red line. From there, follow the directions for the subway to Harvard.

Train Information

  1. Amtrak: The closest Amtrak train station is Boston South Station (BOS). If you arrive via train, follow signs to the MBTA or SUBWAY. South Station is also a stop on the T’s Red Line. You can take an ALEWIFE train to the Harvard station.
  2. Commuter Rail: Boston’s Commuter Rail comes from all directions from towns throughout Eastern Massachusetts. Some trains come into South Station (see above), and others come into North Station. The Commuter Rail North Station is a short, outside walk to the T’s Green Line North Station. Exit the Commuter Rail station and follow signs for the Green Line. Take a Green Line train inbound to Park Street, which connects to the Red Line.

Bus Information

  1. Greyhound Bus: Greyhound buses bound for Boston will bring you to South Station. There is a Red Line subway stop at South Station. Take an inbound train (toward Alewife) to Harvard.
  2. Peter Pan: Peter Pan buses will also bring you to South Station.
  3. Chinatown Buses: There are Boston-bound buses from Chinatowns in Baltimore, Washington, New York and Philadelphia. They are usually substantially cheaper than Greyhound or Peter Pan. These buses will also bring you to South Station.

Hardware Freedom

Thu night in Harvard Square - Charlie's Kitchen and Tanjore.

There will probably be an informal coreboot / people who do low-level hardware / software hacking gathering - Marc Jones, a leading coreboot developer, and Ward Vandewege, coreboot developer and FSF Sys Admin (who will not be in town for the main conference, hence the scheduling), will be in town; some current and former OLPC XO hackers may also be attending.

If you are interested in attending, or helping with some coreboot hacking around this time, please email sysadmin-volunteers@gnu.org with your availability (note we are happy to have people to just come and talk, you don't need to volunteer for us; but do note that the conversation will mostly be of a highly technical nature).

If you are not able to attend in person, please still email saying you would be interested in participating if we get some kind of remote call-in, for example via Muji, set up. (Note: sjoerd in #telepathy on freenode has offered to help us debug any Muji problems we run into - we prefer this to other solutions as Muji in the long term may fulfill our High Priority Free Software Projects list "Free software replacement for Skype" project - note "Muji" used to be called "Mingle".)

Friday night, March 20th: Boston/Cambridge DentEvent

"Dent Events" are meetups of users of Identica and people interested in Free Network Services, open standards for social software, and general social media issues. We'll be having a dentevent at Tommy Doyle's, a pub on Harvard Square, at 7PM. Everyone coming to LP09 is welcome; look for Evan's Identi.ca T-shirt.

A lot of people seem to be interested but nobody is willing to declare a place and time. At 6:00 I'm going to just say that I'm showing up at 7:00 to whatever has the most votes. I will update the wiki to what that is at 6:00, but won't be checking it again after that.

I'm going to be at Fajitas and 'Ritas by Boston Commons at 7:00. I know I said I'd do the highest votes, but I don't have a car and TJ Scallyhwaggle's wasn't really easy to get to by T. Hope somebody else shows up, I'll be wearing a sandman T-Shirt, if that'll help identify me.

  • Colin Williams - Another option is Fajitas and 'Ritas. It's fairly laid back, easy to get to, and since you're constructing your food vegan/vegetarian is possible. Or we could try Fire and Ice, which has the same benefits. Regardless of where we eat, we also need to establish a time, 7 seems like a reasonable time to start dinner.

Vegetarian

  • Bradley M. Kuhn - I would prefer not to go to a bar. I am also vegetarian.

Vegan

Good vegan options include Mai Thai (Downtown Crossing), Grasshopper (Allston), Otherside (Back Bay), Bukowski (Back Bay), Mary Chung's (Central), Charlie's (Harvard), TJ Scallywaggles (Allston -- can't handle many people but tasty vegan pizza) or any of the Thai or Indian places in Harvard Square.

Otherside, Bukowski and Charlie's have a bar atmosphere.

Both Grasshopper and TJ Scallywaggles seem to be vegan/vegetarian only. I also noticed that TJ Scallywaggle's and Grasshopper don't really seem T-friendly, not sure these are viable options.
