+ | # '''Domain names''': We'll ask Sergio Durigan Jr., our Hostmaster[1], to set the three domain names (libreplanet.ca, libreplaneton.ca, libreplanetontario.ca) so they're all aliases for our Wiki page https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario (but this will take a bit more jiggery-pokery than just an A record in DNS). Greg Wright can point the NS records for libreplanetontario.ca to the DNS server that Sergio uses. (Greg and Sergio should contact each other off-list to make this happen)
+ | ## Sergio will host most services on his server, although Bob Jonkman is happy to continue hosting audio files for an eventual podcast.
+ | ## libreplanet.ca will be the canonical domain name. Chapters will be a subdomain (so http://ontario.libreplanet.ca should also alias to https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario ) Services will be set up as subdomains for ease of administration. So, we'll eventually have nextcloud.libreplanet.ca, gnusocial.libreplanet.ca, gitlab.libreplanet.ca and any others. We can start with podcast.libreplanet.ca -- Bob will chat with Sergio off-list to set this up.
+ | # '''Podcasts''': Stephen Paul Weber (singpolyma) has a redo script to create a podcast .rss file from folders of audio files. Bob has git-cloned it; just need to figure out how to make it work. Bob will contact Stephon off-list about it. Script stuff at https://github.com/singpolyma/redo-podcast
+ | # Lots of discussion on our '''Free/Libre Canadian Tax Prepartion Software Project''', now fondly known as FLCTPSP. There's a wiki page to coordinate the project's activities at https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario/FLCTPSP Blaise had a link to a mailing list: https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsfc-discuss.

Free/Libre Canadian Tax Preparation Software Project update
- Greg spoke with lawyer from CIPPIC
- Greg needed to explain some concepts of Free Software to the lawyer
- Discussion of security involved in paper form submission
- Is the difficulty in getting developer access merely a (poor) way of certifying the tax software?
- Access to My Account would work well for us, people would perform the submission themselves
- What would happen if we circulated a spreadsheet to help people fill in their paper forms?
- Perhaps CRA would disallow that too
- The right solution is to prosecute people who do the wrong thing after the fact, not to prevent people from doing the wrong thing beforehand, because that excludes also those of us who would like to do the right thing in a different way. --Stephen Paul Weber
- What can be done? Charter challenge? Doubtful.
- Outreach program is important; judges are a group of people that need to know these issues
- Perhaps Greg will file Freedom Of Information requests to pry out some of this data
- While this project is low on the list of priorities for CIPPIC, Greg will keep in touch, and the lawyer was encouraging.
- What can be done? Charter challenge? Doubtful.
keyboard.io
-
https://shop.keyboard.io/ is a keyboard and rudimentary pointing device with no nonfree software in it
- Uses an Arduino, so it's hackable by the community
- Expensive ($329 USD), but worth it
- The keyboard has an expansion header inside, and each key has LED backlight

[9:11 PM] DanielVillarreal: :-) [9:14 PM] DanielVillarreal: Like using awk ? [9:19 PM] greenmonk: well, I'm working on Pyash, a programming language based on human grammar. [9:21 PM] DanielVillarreal: yes. [9:22 PM] DanielVillarreal: Hoping to make it out to ERK someday. [9:23 PM] DanielVillarreal: ditto that [9:26 PM] DanielVillarreal: Thanks! [9:30 PM] greenmonk: hey, just wanted to mention in relation to the language for tax/government software. the human grammar programming language I'm working on [9:31 PM] greenmonk: oops, sorry g2g, I'll probably have to do the mailing list thing [9:32 PM] greenmonk: okay, back baby is restless [9:32 PM] greenmonk: the youngest is 6 months, older one will be 4 soon [9:33 PM] greenmonk: yep, today I woke up really early, like 5:30 to do some programming before my son woke up around 7 [9:34 PM] greenmonk: so the programming language is generic, but it could be used for taxes and such because it has a vocabulary of around 8,000 words which are easily translated into 30+ human langauges [9:34 PM] DanielVillarreal: I like to discuss human languages. [9:35 PM] greenmonk: well, I have basic C being output right now, still have to add a few more cosntructs to support ANSI C. [9:35 PM] DanielVillarreal: I've been polishing up my scripts for using exiftool, using perl [9:36 PM] DanielVillarreal: lol [9:36 PM] greenmonk: it compiles to OpenCL C as well. [9:36 PM] greenmonk: hmm, I might be able to get the microphone working hold on [9:37 PM] DanielVillarreal: Trying to get my son to using Linux. I need to set up a system for my little girl. She's almost four. She just got some cowgirl boots. [9:38 PM] greenmonk: @daniel I found pocketchip, is a full linux system but portable like a game console [9:38 PM] DanielVillarreal: thanks [9:39 PM] DanielVillarreal: Fedora [9:39 PM] greenmonk: I'm downloading ubuntu 17.04 right now [9:40 PM] greenmonk: I'm hoping on using my programming language to participate in the General Intelligence programming challenge. Don't know if anyone else here is interested in AI. [9:41 PM] DanielVillarreal: I'm a big fan of SystemRescueCD for my toolkit. Had issues w/ latest version of Tinycore. [9:42 PM] DanielVillarreal: I'm interested in AI... I'm looking to the future applications. [9:42 PM] greenmonk: http://general-ai-challenge.org/ [9:42 PM] DanielVillarreal: Thanks [9:43 PM] greenmonk: it is by a millionaire game developer from Prague, Chezh republic, rewards for first round is 12 thousand dollars or thereabouts [9:43 PM] greenmonk: 50 thousand total, the winner gets 12 [9:44 PM] greenmonk: american dollars i beive [9:44 PM] greenmonk: believe* [9:44 PM] greenmonk: Well tax accountants are one of those jobs that has the highest likelyhood of being automated. [9:45 PM] greenmonk: there is already a lot of tax software, much of it free that can help file your taxes for you. [9:46 PM] greenmonk: one of the issues to be overcome with open source linux tax software is cost of certification. [9:48 PM] greenmonk: yeah, I use libre for libre [9:49 PM] greenmonk: in my programming langauge, there actually isn't words for "free" and "libre", but there is liberty and freeware [9:50 PM] greenmonk: I can't add words, it was scripted, by translating a set of 39,000 english words into 30+ of the most popular human langauges. Then I had it take out overly ambigious words as well as homonyms. [9:50 PM] greenmonk: at that point was left with 8,000 words [9:51 PM] DanielVillarreal: Is Klingon one of the most popular languages ? ;-) [9:52 PM] greenmonk: https://gitlab.com/liberit/pyac is the current version, earlier one can be downloaded at sourceforge [9:53 PM] greenmonk: https://sourceforge.net/projects/spel/ [9:54 PM] greenmonk: Klingon is specifically designed to be difficult for humans, using the least common word order and consonant clusters [9:55 PM] greenmonk: here is a PDF about spal https://gitlab.com/liberit/pyac/blob/master/documentation/spal.pdf [9:56 PM] greenmonk: Pyash (SPAL/SPEL) is specifically designed to be easy for humans and computers.. [9:57 PM] greenmonk: it uses the most common word orders and letters, and consonant clusters, also is easily parseable even without spaces (for streams of speech). [9:57 PM] greenmonk: also it is easy to translate between different langauges, so people don't have to learn the Pyash vocabulary, but can simply use their native vocabulary in a more regularized manner. [9:58 PM] greenmonk: that sounds great, hopefully can get the microphone working by then [9:58 PM] DanielVillarreal: well, this could be a very interesting discussion in a local pub... [9:59 PM] greenmonk: I don't drink (Buddhist), but other public places good [9:59 PM] DanielVillarreal: We could have kombucha tea [10:00 PM] DanielVillarreal: Thanks! [10:00 PM] greenmonk: good talk thanks :-) [10:00 PM] greenmonk: good night [10:00 PM] DanielVillarreal: Good night [10:00 PM] Recording stopped

Software Freedom Day 2016
(Saturday, 17 September 2016)
- Venue?
- Raul Suarez may have a venue in Kitchener-Waterloo
- Stephen Paul Weber can arrange Kwartzlab as a venue
- Some concern about target audience:
- Outreach for entry level presentations?
- Technical presentations for hard-core GNU/Linux users?
- Demonstrations fall in between, appeal to neither
- Everyone has seen "What is Free Software" presentation, but needed for new people
- Outreach needed for people who have no understanding of Free Software and Free Culture at all
- People don't know that Freedom exists
- This is our target audience!
- People don't know that software can be made to do what they want, it's not like a microwave
- Software comparisons may not be an effective way to promote Free Software
- How to talk philosophy? More important, how to attract new people?
- Our theme will be "How to convince people that Free Software exists, is legal, and is available to ordinary people"
- To attract new people we can work on the streets, attracting passersby
- Go to where people are, don't expect them to come to us
- People who come to rooms are already the converted
- Stephen Paul Weber does "Libre Streets" for Free Culture
- Blaise Alleyne does campus outreach
- Can have a room event as a follow up after street outreach
- Answer questions like "How do you make money?", "Is it legal?"
- University campus is more welcoming than a street corner for street activism
- Follow-up venue can be at a nearby coffee shop
- Need some brochures to remind street teamers of core points, also a take-along item for people
- Three prong event:
- Prep the street team with talking points, &c.
- Go on the street to communicate the message of Software Freedom, and invite people to:
- Follow up event with a presentation, Q&A
- Request an e-mail address for follow-up
- E-mail is good for in-depth follow-up, people don't give up their e-mail address easily
- Discussion mailing list, not a newsletter or announcement list
- If there are few signups (10) then a personal follow may be better than a list
- Needs followup, perhaps a Mumble meeting just for SFD
Tax software
- Gregg Knittl has followed up with CRA
- still asking questions
- trying to find out what information CRA has for developers
- Need: Defining and capturing tax calculation
- Crowdsource them? Too much for Gregg Knittl to do himself
- Gregg Knittl thinks CRA will not provide the tax calculations, will only verify a developed program
- Forms like T1 are available, we may need to extract calculations from these
- Wiki page has been updated: https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario/FLCTPSP
- Gregg Knittl is waiting to receive test cases from CRA
- If tax software cannot be made with source code available then we may need to switch to political lobbying rather than writing softare
- Bob Jonkman's accountant was not interested in getting Free Software tax software, already uses proprietary software
Other stuff
- Stephen Paul Weber's book has been featured on https://unglue.it/
More SFD
- Gregg Knittl suggests People might be interested in Privacy, Encryption
- Other tools, eg. Raw Therapee
- Bob Jonkman has done several presentations on security, privacy and encryption (at last year's SFD)
- Blaise Alleyne suggests using the Wiki and mailing list to organize SFD, no Mumble meeting
- Bob Jonkman and Daniel Villarreal discuss strategies for attracting people to SFD

24 June 2016
A mumble meeting with Bob Jonkman, Blaise Alleyne, Stephen Paul Weber, and Greg Knittl. Allan joined us with text-only chat. An audio recording is available: http://podcasts.libreplanet.ca/libreplanetontario-2016-06-24.ogg (31 MBytes, 41m14s)
Minutes

Domain names: We'll ask Sergio Durigan Jr., our Hostmaster[1], to set the three domain names (libreplanet.ca, libreplaneton.ca, libreplanetontario.ca) so they're all aliases for our Wiki page https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario (but this will take a bit more jiggery-pokery than just an A record in DNS). Greg Wright can point the NS records for libreplanetontario.ca to the DNS server that Sergio uses. (Greg and Sergio should contact each other off-list to make this happen)
- Sergio will host most services on his server, although Bob Jonkman is happy to continue hosting audio files for an eventual podcast.
- libreplanet.ca will be the canonical domain name.
- Podcasts: Stephen Paul Weber (singpolyma) has a redo script to create a podcast .rss file from folders of audio files. Bob has git-cloned it; just need to figure out how to make it work. Bob will contact Stephon off-list about it. Script stuff at https://github.com/singpolyma/redo-podcast
- Lots of discussion on our Free/Libre Canadian Tax Prepartion Software Project, now fondly known as FLCTPSP. There's a wiki page to coordinate the project's activities at https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Ontario/FLCTPSP Blaise had a link to a mailing list: https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/fsfc-discuss.

28 July 2015
Our first mumble meeting! Happened at 7 p.m. and used LibrePlanet BR's mumble server (while we don't have our own).
- We defined an initial agenda for our Software Freedom Day in Toronto
- What is Free Software by Sergio
- ??? by Blaise
- Keysigning party by Bob Jonkman
- Free movie exhibition by Laurel L. Russwurm
- Lightning talks (to be organized by Rudolf)
- A few comments about the venue

- Likewise, for hacklab.to (https://hacklab.to/)
- Bob will contact GTALUG to find out about Ryerson
- Things TODO now:
- Create a wiki page. This page can be hosted here or at SFD's website.
- Get to a point where we feel comfortable in sharing a "Save the Date" message.
29 June 2015
Held at the HeroBurger restaurant on Mt. Pleasant Rd.
- We lamented the state of Free Software gaming, and the prevalence of proprietary gaming engines like Steam.
- We lamented the state of Free Software administration, and how it seems that SysAdmins today don't know how to use Free Software tools.
- Outreach:
- Sergio and Bob attended the Ubuntu/Debian Release Party in April
- Rudolf attended a computer language interest group [I forgot details]
- Bob attended a MapTime meetup in May, and a couple of GTALUG meetings
- Some of us (Bob, Sergio) exchanged GnuPG fingerprint strips, with the intention of digitally signing each others' keys. This could become a regular occurrence at LibrePlanet meetings.
- We discussed Software Freedom Day:
- Software Freedom Day is Saturday, 19 September 2015
- A venue is needed. Suggested locations:
- Alleyne Inc. offices (Blaise will check)
- Mozilla offices (Sergio will attend a MapTime or Mappy Hour[1] and investigate availability)
- FreeGeek Toronto (someone needs to contact them)
- Suggested format? After some discussion, it was decided to keep it simple for the first year. One stream of programming, with a second stream of Free Culture films; Laurel Russwurm can repeat the Free Culture Film Festival held in Kitchener in 2014.
- Suggested schedule:
- 10:30am - Presentation: What Is Free Software (Sergio)
- 11:30am - Five Lightning Talks (organized by Rudolf)
- 12:00am - Presentation (TBD)

- FreeGeek Toronto http://freegeektoronto.org/
- OpenData Toronto http://www.meetup.com/Opentoronto/ (Richard Pietro)
- OpenStreetMap Enthusiasts http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Toronto/ (Richard Weait)

- HacklabTO https://hacklab.to/ (Scott Sullivan?)
20 January 2015
LibrePlanetOntario meeting 2015-01-20.txt (2.3 kBytes)
Duke of Kent Pub, Yonge & Eglinton, Toronto, Ontario
(bullet points rearranged slightly from the order in which they were discussed)
Meetings
- Host some meetings in other locations, eg. Kitchener-Waterloo or Ottawa
- There was some interest from people in KW, but lack of easy/cheap prevents them from attending meetings in KW
- There have been sightings of Libre Software people from the Otttawa area in the IRC channel ( irc://irc.freenode.net/#lp-ca-on )
- Meetings should be scheduled at regular times and at a regular venue
- We'll try the Alleyne Computer Centre (???)
- Meetings on a Saturday would encourage turnout from other localities
- Hold virtual meetings to alternate with meatspace meetings
- Streamcast meatspace meetings with a full stack of Libre software
- The software demonstrated
- The platform OS running the software demonstrated
- The streamcasting recording/broadcast software
- The editing software
- The output format should be in an open format, released under a Free Culture license
Web site
- Set up web site http://libreplanetontario.ca (???) to re-redirect to the Wiki page http://wiki.libreplanet.net/wiki/Ontario (???)
- Post an RSS feed aggregator on a subdomain http://news.libreplanetontario.ca (???)
- Potential feeds: Blaise Alleyne's blog, !Libreplanet group in the !Fediverse, Wiki updates
- Post an RSS feed aggregator on a subdomain http://news.libreplanetontario.ca (???)
- Wiki should have sub-pages for chapters, eg. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ottawa, Toronto
- Put them all in a Category:LibrePlanetOntario
Other
- Matt Lee from the FSF will be coming to Toronto on (??? Dates ???)
- Invite Matt Lee to speak at the next LibrePlanet Ontario meeting
- There should certainly be a post-meeting meeting at a local pub!
- Free Software projects could have a "Product Channel"
- Corporations can issue RFQs, Purchase Orders, buy a license, get it all OK'd by their Legal Dept.
- Channel partners (independent consultants, perhaps the developers) can provide support
- Dual-license for corporate use? Maybe, maybe not.
- May result in things like Marketing Managers on Free Software products; project focus being driven by sales rather than what's good for the project
